SUSPENSION SPRING REPLACEMENT

The suspension spring in your clock functions as a low friction hinge to allow the pendulum to swing. The suspension spring is a rather fragile part; if the clock is moved with the pendulum attached, if the pendulum is removed carelessly, or just old age, the suspension spring will break. Removing and installing a new suspension spring is something the clock owner can do himself or herself. Click for Spring Dimension Chart or Spring Parts information.

how to remove the pendulum from the clock

Some clocks have a black plastic guard covering the top of the suspension spring and the thumbscrew. This guard slides off: pull it off horizontally.

Remove the suspension spring thumbnut and the suspension spring should fall into your hand. If your suspension spring is broken in half, locate the other half. Carefully measure the spring and compare the dimensions to the dimensions provided in this suspension spring chart. If you do not find a match please call for advice.

how to locate correct replacement spring

Another way to locate the correct spring for your clock is to look at the back of the clock movement. You may find a Manufactures name such as Urgos, Howard Miller, Kieninger, or Hermle and a MOVEMENT MODEL NUMBER such as 451-053F, 1151-030H, 1161-030K etc. The numbers before the dash are the series number. The series number associated with each suspension spring is listed in the text with each suspension spring.

If the Urgos Company manufactured your movement, the movement model numbers almost always begins with "UW" followed by a five-digit number and then one alpha letter, IE UW32319J. If your movement is an Urgos then there are only two choices of suspension springs. Look at the pictures provided and it should be easy to identify the suspension spring you need.

If the movement installed in your clock was manufactured by the Kieninger Company, you should find a model identification such as: HSU, HTU, KSU, RK, RU, and several others along with some numbers. Comparing these alpha letters and the associated numbers to the chart provided should allow you to find the right suspension spring for your clock.
